Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket to focus on the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka. Maxwell, 36, has represented Australia in 149 ODIs since his debut in August 2012, scoring 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.7. His ODI career includes four centuries and 23 half-centuries.
Maxwell’s bowling contributions include 77 wickets at an economy rate of 5.46, with his best bowling figures being 4/40 against India in Rajkot. He was a key player in Australia’s two ODI World Cup triumphs, in 2015 and 2023. One of his most notable performances came during the 2023 World Cup when, despite severe cramps, he scored an unbeaten 201 runs off 128 balls, helping Australia recover from 91/7 to chase down 293 against Afghanistan.
The decision to retire from ODIs was influenced by the physical demands of the 50-over format and a leg injury that affected his performance and fielding. Maxwell stated that during the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, he felt his body was struggling to cope with the conditions, which impacted his ability to contribute effectively. He discussed his future with Australia’s Chair of Selectors, George Bailey, and concluded that he would not be able to continue at the top level until the 2027 World Cup.
Maxwell emphasized that he did not want to continue playing ODI cricket for selfish reasons and preferred to give opportunities to younger players to secure their place in the team. He acknowledged the team’s clear direction and believes his retirement will assist selectors in planning the squad leading into the next World Cup. Maxwell also mentioned his pride in having been selected “ahead of his time” and expressed gratitude for his long ODI career despite the ups and downs.
While Maxwell steps away from ODI cricket, he remains committed to Australia’s T20 program. Bailey described him as one of the most dynamic players in ODI cricket and highlighted Maxwell’s passion, skill, and longevity. Maxwell will continue to participate in the Big Bash League, T20 franchise leagues, and the build-up to the 2026 T20 World Cup.
